The city of Danville is the county seat of Vermilion County. Abraham Lincoln
often frequented the city, staying at the home of his personal friend William
Fithian. The 1850s-era home, which presently houses the Vermillion County Museum,
was where Lincoln gave his 1858 campaign speech to the U.S. Senate. Danville’s
baseball team, the Danville Dans, are members of the Central Illinois Collegiate
League and play all their home games at the Danville Stadium during the June-August
season. The Turtle Run Golf Club attracts visitors not only to its public 18-hole
course but also to the Les Nessman Memorial Turkey Drop, an annual Thanksgiving
Day event. Numerous acres have been designated for state parks in and around
Danville, offering visitors many opportunities for a picnic or other types of
recreation. These state parks include Meade Park, Garfield Park, Douglas Park
and Winter Park.
